today i saw francis getting confirmed

for a position on the Environmental Policy and Planning Commission. There was something special about her. As soon as she opened her mouth, it was abundantly clear that her English wasn’t proficient, but even so, she impressed the hell out of everybody.

What made her special was her confidence. And this wasn’t a kind of pompous confidence; rather, it was a humble confidence. Confidence that she knew what she was talking about, that she had an amazing worldview that she wanted to share. The thing that I thought was so strong of her was the fact that she continued talking through the snickering and side glances, saying her piece with tons of poise. She stumbled a lot and had to pause occasionally to think of the right words to say, but once she finished her responses to the confirmation questions, we all realized one by one that what she was saying made a lot of sense. She was confirmed unanimously.

The way Francis spoke tonight made me realize something: This is the way I want to live my life. Cutting out the self-doubt and overthinking and replacing those negative traits with a steady confidence in myself. Does that sound cheesy? Does this post sound cheesy? Great! I wrote it and couldn’t be happier.

By the way, there was another person who was getting confirmed today, and this person spoke genuinely and passionately while not giving a FUCK what anybody else thought. This person is a total baller and an inspiration to me.
